Animal Farm

Scenic Design: Shaun Motley
Based on the classic novel by George Orwell, Animal Fram is a play about a group of animals that rebel against their human owners so that they can govern themselves and create an all equal society. However, their utopian society slowly turns into a totalitarian dictatorship as the pigs seek more power over the animals.
In the play there’s that note that drives the entire concept of the play, "the animals in the play all look like us. The humans don’t look at all like us”. As the Costume Designer, it was my job to make the audience view the Animals as human and the Humans as inhuman. I wanted to display costumes that don’t follow a specific time period but instead showcase working class fashion throughout the years. This was so that the Audience could connect to the Animals, but also show the realities of the characters world during times where it feels like a utopia. What these characters roles are on the farm regarding labor, their animal identities, and their arc throughout the play also were things that heavily influenced the costume choices.
This play was recognized by the Santa Barbara Independent via an Indy Award for it’s Costume Design.

Mood Boards
In the beginning of the design process, I created these emotional response moods boards to the play. These boards helped guide me into visualizing the world these characters lived in and what they would wear
