Spring Dance: Afterlight

Katharsis

The 2025 Spring Dance Concert consisted of 6 choreographed dance pieces by 6 senior BFA dance majors. Not only was it a majority student choreographed Dance Concert, but a student-designed Dance Concert as well. The piece I costume designed was Katharsis by Jenna Turner. The piece involved 3 sections where the dancers would move through the feelings of abandonment, isolation and release. As the costume designer, I wanted the costumes to emulate a state of being abandoned. For this piece I wanted the costumes to emulate a state of being abandoned. The dancers were once a blank canvas but have been through a journey where their clothes are now disheveled, lost, and torn. Not knowing where to go next or where their place is. Resembling something that has been lost and forgotten.

The Masks

In this piece the dancers wore Masks. The choreography had the dancers interacting with the masks, taking them off and then putting them back on throughout the dance. The masks are meant to showcase uniformity among the dancers, as it strips away their identity. It also adds to the eeriness feeling of the piece.

The Silhouette

For the silhouette, I wanted to have the costumes gravitate downwards, whether that is through hanging excess fabric or elongated sleeves, the fabric of the costumes will be traveling down to the floor. It was also important for the silhouette to follow the shape of the body and allow the body to be shown so that nothing is hiding the movements made by the dancer.
