The Three Penny Opera
The Threepenny Opera was a dark-humored play that magnifies the dark underbelly of Victorian London. The costumes designed by Alexa Behm put into perspective the characters' struggle under a corrupt system. As an Assistant Costume Designer, not only did I help with fittings & notes but was also heavily involved in the distressing and aging process.
Assistant Costume Designer for
Distressing & Aging
(Mr. Peachum, Jenny, & the Ladies of Grape Lane)
One of my jobs as an assistant costume designer was distressing & aging a lot of the costumes. Mr. Peachums's jacket, Jenny’s dress, and a lot of pieces worn by the Ladies of Grape Lane were all pieces I distressed and aged. By using spray bottles with dyes of different colors, I transformed the garment to look extremely worn and never washed often. Spray bottles with bleach were used to lighten and create questionable stains. Afterward I typically used watered-down acrylics and Schmere Sticks make some staining more visible for the stage.
Mattheus & Robert’s Hats
For Mattheus’s hat, I heavily distressed it with a dremal and sand paper. Then add stains and aging with fabric spray paint. I also attached the feathers on Robert’s hat.
